Iran launches YouTube rival

Iran launched a new Internet site is provided for residents in the country to share short videos.Given the name Mehr, the Iranian official broadcaster, IRIB, runs a video sharing site like YouTube.

This is not the first video sharing site in Iran, because Cloob, which also provides social networking services, has provided a similar service, called authorities.

Video online is very popular in Iran, but the low speed internet connections make most people enjoy these videos downloaded way first.

YouTube, the largest video sharing site in the world owned by Google, blocked the Iranian government since 2009.

Tehran YouTube cut in Iran coverage after showing various protest alleged electoral fraud by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

However, they can usually be technology-literate ‘through this blockade’ by utilizing the so-called Virtual Private Networks or VPN to access YouTube.

So far no data on the number of users Mehr, but officials known as one of the most popular internet sites in Iran.

Official’s headquarters are in Iran and have international links such as the Korean electronics company, LG.
